Sant Nirankari Mission Hosts Panel Discussion at UN Women Empowerment Conference
The Sant Nirankari Mission organized a panel discussion on the topic of ‘Interfaith Role in Women Empowerment’ on March 21, 2016 in New York during the Annual Conference of the Commission on the Status of Women organized by the United Nations.
The priority theme of UN Women is ‘women’s empowerment and its link to sustainable development and the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls’. The panel sought to discuss the role of interfaith approach based on spirituality towards empowerment of women and raising their status.
The United Nations is already convinced that all violence against women is not something that will end by setting strict laws alone. We need to create change in the core attitude where the violent behavior stems from. In this context the Sant Nirankari Mission’s message of oneness at the spiritual core and a life of peaceful co-existence finds direct relevance.
The Sant Nirankari Mission believes that any kind of inequality can be better sorted out through spirituality. It is the only way to go in future. Gender bias has no place here. The Mission’s followers always hold women in high esteem both in the organizational and socio-spiritual activities without any discrimination on the basis of gender.”
Besides Dr Iqbaljit Rai, the participants from the Mission included Rev Vivek Sharma, Rajesh Bhasin and Shabnam Madhok from New York, Rev Shilu Keswani from Huston and Rev Ritu Taneja from Toronto. Other speakers at the Panel discussion were: Ravi Karkara, Sr Advisor and Deputy Executive Director, UN; Professor and an authentic spirituality author Richard Patter; Joy Theriot; and Maharoo Moshari.
Rev C.L. Gulati, Secretary Sant Nirankari Mandal adds that for distinguished socio- charitable activities, Sant Nirankari Mission was granted Special Consultative Status by UN in July, 2012, to work for ECOSOC and other auxiliary institutions of the UN. Since then, the delegates of the Mission have been participating in the conferences of the Commission on the Status of Women held in New York every March.
As a matter of fact the view point of the Mission based on spiritual approach to social developments is being acknowledged and appreciated by the International Community increasingly.
